UBC President Hosts Veterans and Minister of Veterans Affairs on Campus

On Friday, March 6th UBC President Santa J. Ono hosted a reception for military-connected students at the Norman MacKenzie House on UBC’s Point Grey campus. Several dozen UBC students, alumni, staff and faculty were in attendance in addition to special guests from the Royal Canadian Legion, the Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence, and MP for Cardigan, General Walter Natynczyk, Deputy Minister of Veterans Affairs and the Honourable David Eby, BC’s Attorney General and MLA for Vancouver – Point Grey. In his remarks President Ono reiterated UBC’s support for military connected students through both existing programs as well as UBC’s new Veteran Friendly Campus Initiative.

Announced in September 2019 the Veteran Friendly Campus Initiative will see UBC become Canada’s first Veteran Friendly Campus by the end of 2020. The Initiative will provide military-connected students with specialized mental health and counselling support, priority student housing, social and recreational opportunities and professional development courses like Aboriginal Studies in Canada. Additionally UBC’s Point Grey Campus will be home to a new Royal Canadian Legion Branch, the first new branch established in British Columbia in more than 25 years.
